Books and Required Reading
Osensei Shoshin Nagamine wrote two books, and you can buy those right here on our site. There is also a video you can order, and for more books and videos, follow the link to the official WMKA website. They have a large selection of books and videos presented. We only feature the two books that are required reading, and the video with footage of Grandmaster Nagamine with his son.
The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do
This book is essential to any student of Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu. All eighteen katas are described, with room for notes and highlights of your own. Osensei Shoshin Nagamine shares his life, the history of karate and the techniques of Matsubayashi Shorin-Ryu.
|Tales of Okinawa's Great Masters
This book tells of the lives and histories of ten of Okinawa's greatest masters. Osensei Nagamine spent his life researching these masters, trained with them and/or interviewed their families and students. Along with lots of photographs and illustrations, you will read about, among others: Ankichi Arakaki, Gichin Funakoshi, Kanryo Higaonna, Anko Itosu, Chotoku Kyan, Kosaku Matsumora, Sokon Matsumura, Choki Motobu, and Tode Sakugawa.
While it crosses over all karate styles, this book is required reading for students of Matsubayashi-Ryu, the style Osensei Nagamine founded in 1947. (Note: This book is now out of print. It may take a while to find a used copy at a good price, but it is worth the effort.)
