Once I started going to class with Grandmaster, there was close to nothing that could keep me away (my injured ankle did, one day... see previous journal entry). I learned so much, and I had to un-learn quite a bit too! It turned out that some of the things that I had been taught and picked up in the US was not in line with what they did in Okinawa. It was refreshing and reassuring to get the information from the source, and not passed down and filtered through generations.
One morning during keiko Osensei pulled an interpreter to the side. He had listed some questions down on paper addressed to me, and in front of everyone I was asked:
My reply: "I wanted to see the original source of inspiration so I could practice and teach Matsubayashi for a lifetime."

My reply: "Karate has a humbling and empowering dichotomy that results in continual growth."
My reply: "Yes!" (even though I had already been teaching for a few years)
"You have my blessing to have your own dojo because in my opinion your "form" is true to correct Okinawan style..and if you are to do this I will expect your repeated returns to Okinawa"
I have kept this promise returning another three times since. In 1998 I was very lucky to live at Makishi Sensei's house and train under his guidance as well as Soke Takayoshi's instruction at the hombu for a couple of months.
Next entry will be: Highlights from Osensei. After that, comments and pearls of wisdom from many other senseis Soke Nagamine, Makishi Sensei, Nakamura Sensei and more.Lara Wendy Preston
