Kata corrections - my notes on Fukyugata Ni
As I was doing keiko with many Sensei in Okinawa, they all offered different corrections. I took notes on these, and present some here for you. Chances are someone else may benefit from insight directly from the masters.
Note: these kata correction pages (this is just the first one) are not so much intended to tell you the "right" way of doing kata, but more to point out that everyone will focus on something different.
General corrections:
- On the shuto (kyobu) to the neck, you need to cross both your arms and not use one arm only, the shuto arm needs to go to the inside of other arm, making contact like scissors effect.
- After first shodan uke remember to cross arms dropping back into gigotai then yoko uke. Next move the right foot pivots but does not move, left foot draws up into standing position. After second shodan uke spring back about three inches, be blocking as you are springing and dont wait until the end of spring to execute it.
- At the mai geri, hiji ate, the level is to the chest, not to the face, and for the gedan uke following remember to re-cross your arms so both are used to execute the block. Again next move the left foot stays (or bent leg) and other leg draws up very quick same speed as shuto wips out, (Tamaki sensei...says elbow should lead the way).
- On the last moves the shuto arm is out, draw back, the wrists simply cross, come back into chamber and for the double strikes one fists width, two inbetween, make sure shoulders are level, feet come together with no space inbetween, repeat.
- On the hiji ate why 45 degrees? "so you can extend your reach" second application is you can turn your elbow into urchin strike.

- Application: when you do the shuto to the neck the leg moves same speed and timing as outgoing arm, your foot is trapping the inside of opponents foot, so you hook their foot drawing them into you as you shuto to their neck and they are thrown off balance.
- On the hiji ate, elbow smash, shoulders are 45 degrees, then the shoulders square up on the chudanzuki, also the timing for the gedan uke and punch are not one-two timing, but on one count timing, tied together as one count. fluid.
- After the first shodan uke when you fall back into gigotai and do side block keep your eyes level and dont keep them at the floor, face level. Don't downcast your eyes.
- After the first high block when you drop into gigotai all lands at the same time, weight drops.

- The shuto out to neck the foot slide up and the shuto hand needs to be same time, use your koshi to whip out your hips remember to get the elbow to snap into it and not just stick out your arm.
- When you do kia make sure it is from down deep-tanden and not upper body.
Higa Sensei
After hiji ate, shoulders 45 degrees the following punch should drive your koshi to be square and locked with good momentum.
