KUSANKU

Makishi Sensei
  1. Has 29 counts. Okinawa 1999
  2. When you do the kickover you hop in the air. Okinawa 1999
  3. On the ryu move don't open the thumb. Okinawa 1999
  4. On the Chinese palm the left hand circles high. Okinawa 1999
  5. On the lift slide-in punch after the 4 shot, right arm does circle, lift; looks Chinese. Okinawa 1999
  6. After the third behind the head shuto twisted leg kick, then left hand does a scoop strike, not linear, then fist turns over and right arm punches in. After this move should be a naihanchi leg kick with the left foot before. Also, beginning moves, open hand down block, your back shouldn't be straight, but bent as in Okan/duck move. Okinawa 1999
  7. Toward the end when you do the goju-ryu block should be a bigger circle with the right hand. Okinawa 1999
  8. First opening move: place hands in yoi ready position, then when you get to the top, hold it for one count. Then as you draw the circle down with your arms, don't open up your arms so wide - so don't open up the armpits so much. Okinawa 1999
  9. Then the Rohai type move - you need to curl the hand more around your forehead. Okinawa 1999
  10. Then on the punch return to hammer, you need to draw back the whole arm into more of a fighting gesture - just don't turn fist. Okinawa 1999
  11. Then after the four shutos, you lift the guard by using your right hand, but you do a small circle by using the hip ~ and then the hand also sways, be sure to kind of do the same with your support hand. Next move is chase punch combined with support arm with fist palm up. Okinawa 1999
  12. After elbow, the ear shuto ~ starting point is the ear, don't go linear like a push, but cut in circular but not wide. Okay, after jump down, when you stand up your belt should be facing straight and trunk of body not 45° - after second set of this, you do the one with the kick. When you land the left arm does not come in straight, but scoops then turns over and right comes in. Okinawa 1999
  13. Next move the left foot goes back and does a firm stomp, but it is not a kick up. Then after the turn you do the kick, should be upward then downward, then crouched. Keep your fingers in the same place! Look front and back (on the way to this position you should have hopped in the air a little). Then you go into jigotai-dachi (You are skipping or rushing this) and slap fists on thighs. Okinawa 1999
  14. Shuto (do a little spring step here) so you can draw back the left foot. Soft slide toward you as you do the hand move slow. Then nukite-zuki and left hand should be in armpit, then do the sandan move (reformed). Okinawa 1999
  15. On the Chinese move, draw left hand up high, then next move needs better setup; lands almost the same, but left arm more in front and right arm more in. Okinawa 1999
  16. Okay, then the two waist strikes and kamae correction. Start out circular but finish by drawing in linear into chest. After the kick, 2 moves, last move should cut right down the centerline, ending straight down mid-face. Okinawa 1999
  17. Also, after you do the second spring nekoashi-dachi elbow, your right foot needs top step over, then you are setup for shuto. Okinawa 1999
  18. On the spring elbows, turn the waist; give it gusto! Okinawa 1999
  19. Kata check Okinawa 1999
  20. First count is all the way to first shuto.
  21. When you do the two Rohai moves, don't bob your head up and down, and remember to put 50/50% strength on both arms.
  22. After you do the two hammers, bring them in tight.
  23. When you turn and do the pinan shodan turn, koshi straight so you can really twist on the first shuto.
  24. On the lift both arms must move, the inside just lifts, and the outside first goes to the outside only a little, and then lifts straight up using the top of palm.
  25. Then punch and spring, inside arm is fist palm up.
  26. On the turn punch, the left arm should not return to chamber, but start from chest position, and coil up koshi to get out (not arm only)
  27. Then elbow, face is facing 45°.
  28. Then ear shuto (don't push out linear, but make more rounded (short distance)).
  29. Then hop on your way down. Your high block needs not to be on the side, but straight over your eyes at a 45° angle. When you land, block is finished.
  30. Coming up twist koshi to get punch out, and finish with koshi straight.
  31. Left punch comes slightly back to chamber so it comes out straight.
  32. On the two Pinan Yondan punch/kicks angle your punches out slightly so if needed they could block as well as strike.
  33. After the elbow and the two hops and get up kamae (round then straight down), the scoop block is actually a strike. This is a hammer strike into their side, so you need to bring it over to the right side, then squeeze in your right waist a little, but don't drop height on the fist.
  34. Turn over punch straight in.
  35. Do naihanchi leg block and double punch.
  36. Turn around zenkutsu-dachi; punch comes from halfway, and use koshi.
  37. Then the kick is up and straight down, not circular. Hop in the air, leg should be straight behind you, and not off to the side.
  38. The knee should have some distance from the ground and not touching.
  39. Then turn, push off; pause on the jigotai-dachi, then shuto.
  40. Turn slowly; draw back the left foot and the left hand. The thumb is open, and slide the right hand through. Now keep the right hand open and stepping, do nukite-zuki with the left hand open coming into the right armpit.
  41. After the Chinese circle blocks (remember the right hand goes high) go into jigotai-dachi setup and on the high block/low block combo remember that the left goes on the outside.
  42. Then when your turn around, make sure to get more coverage on the hammers. They need to go to side more.
  43. Then turn and kamae here, you must pause before you kick.
  44. After the kick, on the first high/low combination block, left is on the outside.
  45. When doing the last one, on the finish, you must bring right arm directly over the center of your head immediately; don't go from outside to inside.
  46. On the opening move don't make the circle too big, and make it in front of you. Osaka Temple 2000
  47. The punch/drop punches are not jodan; they are chudan level. Osaka Temple 2000
  48. There are 4/5 kiais in the kata. The first one is after the lift guard and punch/spring in nekoashi-dachi. Osaka Temple 2000
  49. Don't make the jump-set down-stand up punch as two counts, but as a fluid motion form the block to the standing. Osaka Temple 2000
  50. Make sure the side punch is kind of like naihanchi extension; really get it in there. Then, in this kosa-dachi, your left foot comes out from behind into the jigotai-dachi with a more circle motion, and stomp/set down, kiaing as the punch comes out. The turn into the next move is a set up (V-angled) from the chest. Not like the Pinan Godan/Passai move. Osaka Temple 2000
  51. Then kick looking straight, turn, and push body up using only the fingers. Osaka Temple 2000
  52. The dragon Ryu thumb is open and from the inside elbow slide down, but not the whole length of the arm. Osaka Temple 2000
  53. Then nukite-zuki and the palm strike with the spring comes not from the front, but from the chamber position. Osaka Temple 2000
  54. As you drop back into jigotai-dachi, set up on the left side. Your right arm needs to come to "the inside of the left arm". kick straight up. Osaka Temple 2000
  55. As you go to close, make your left inside hand go from low-to-high really slowly, ending at the same time as your right hand closes in front of your face. Osaka Temple 2000
  56. Opening move kamae, stop at the top; make sound at the bottom. Okinawa 2003
  57. After two shuto palm-uke and chudan-uke - the chudan zuki/tateken is chudan level. Okinawa 2003
  58. On the lift the guard spring, do not overemphasize the inside hand; the outside hand lift needs to dominate. Okinawa 2003
  59. Next move inside hand follow book palm face up. Okinawa 2003
  60. After the hangetsu-barai-uke move. Okinawa 2003
  61. Fingers gripped to the ground, back leg is straight, do not bend the knee.
  62. Do not re-adjust your fingers to the side; placement is only once.
  63. Turn and look to the side and your back foot changes to side position (like sidekick.
  64. Emphasize a push up spring motion by powers of the fingers
  65. Make sure form is good on next move jigotai-dachi medium power in the fist to thighs move
  66. After sandan move, the set up of the double palm block is left open, also facing down so both fingers/hands face down, but end position remains the same (left hand goes to fingers facing up). Okinawa 2003
  67. On the turn around avoid punch and strike to the opponent's side, it was previously conceptualized as a hammer type impact, but Makishi says it's missing a snap (as in uchi-uke) so actually principle of move has more snap, less slam. Okinawa 2003
  68. On the final move, do not stylize the right arm out too much. Bring it to a regular 45°. Do not create too much arm over the head, bring directly into shuto position. Okinawa 2003

Higa Sensei
  1. Beginning of kata, the tatekens are actually this - 2 high punches (regular) that drop into tateken formation. Okinawa 1998
  2. After first four shuto, there is no spring step for lifting the guard, but next move (punch) there is. Okinawa 1998
  3. After the first Jigotai-dachi double tennis preparation (kamae) move your shuto-uchi to neck covering forehead, you kick (right) set down, legs criss-crossed (kosa-dachi) and double down block at your side. Okinawa 1998
  4. For the (double chase punch) first do the double down block, then turn your left leg comes out and does the opposite of naihanchi move, a circular swoop in front setting into jigotai-dachi, then both fists set up under left armpit, then comes chase/square punch combo. Okinawa 1998
  5. After shuto spring, you turn stand and do the glide move. (I think it involves the whole arm and not just the right hand) Okinawa 1998
  6. When you turn to do the spring left/spring right forearm strikes to the sides of punching opponent, you need to slide in at a 45° for both the left and right spring. After last one, the right foot will be forward, so it drops back to make a straight jigotai-dachi ready for kamae. Okinawa 1998

Kadekaru Sensei
  1. The drop jodan-uke, gedan soto-uke combo, the drop is 100 percent quiet and soft, the next move (like Pinan shodan) there is a twist and torque with the midsection when producing that punch. Okinawa 1995
